Daddy earned the money, and his generosity created monsters. Those monsters put the whole family in a situation that could result in criminal convictions and financial losses through litigation, because of a false self-image, over-inflated egos and a confirmation bias.

When a person earns their money, I mean really earns it, they treasure every penny. When times are good, you still remember the days of penny pinching and of when simple things made you happy.

A person who hasn’t earned their life has a very care free and flippant attitude towards wealth. They’ve never experienced the things that go into creating a wealthy life, both good and bad.

One of the most valuable experiences in the creation of wealth is being forced into situations where you’ve had to protect yourself.

It starts with “if only I’d signed a contract” and over the years you become pre-emptive in problem solving. You take note of your gut instinct and you begin to meticulously document interactions, including recording conversations and storing all written correspondence. Most of the time these habits are precautionary, but on occasion their vitality can’t be over stated.

In a single 8 minute recording I made on Thursday morning, at 10:23am, Senior Monster (daddies wife) confirmed the details of a verbal contract, breach of that contract, harassment amounting to criminal harassment, and then we captured an assault on myself by the “thick as a log” husband of Junior Monster (daddies daughter). We also captured the period in which Junior Monster dialled 999 and made a false accusation… ie. wasting police time.

8 Minutes of ignorance could (depending on how what we decide to do) result in a criminal conviction for three individuals… and one hell of a sweet civil case.

8 Minutes of ignorance and inflated sense of self… that’s all it takes. These people were well aware by this point conversations were being recorded and documented, but through lack of experience nobody made the link between absurd behaviour and consequences.

Daddy’s unconditional love of his family hasn’t done anybody any favours.

Now if Daddy had become involved I expect he would have had the presence of mind to avoid landing in the poop, but with wife and daughter being gifted their existence they acted irresponsibly, embarrassing their family by spouting off things like “we know everyone, you don’t know anyone” (junior monster) and “I’m going to make sure everyone knows about you” (Senior Monster).

Junior Monster was correct – the police know her and her family, and were quite clear they were sick of the frivolous drama. The officer I spoke to expressed frustration at name-dropping and boastfulness about family wealth – in his words “it makes no difference to anything”.

Senior Monster has quite a reputation, ironic considering her promise of defamation (please oh please, we can add it to the list). A person I’d never met before asked, out of the blue and without prompting, “it was the mother that was the antagonist wasn’t it?”.

While writing this post I popped out to the shops and spoke to another neighbour who was, frankly, scathing about the family (and entirely correct.)

Wealth is more than just money – family is a big part of wealth, happiness, friends etc. If you and your family are the joke in the village, detested by most, are you really wealthy?

Because they’ve been given everything in this life, literally everything, these women have a strong dependence on daddy. He provides money, he catches them when they fall, but he didn’t parent his children and he didn’t require his beneficiaries to act with humility. The third generation is also affected – young kids who haven’t been taught right from wrong, and go around kicking people, throwing things at horses, etc.

When you don’t earn your own money, either you can’t believe others could have any wealth, or you are filled with jealousy that others have been able to earn their own way. I don’t boast about the business success I’ve had, and I don’t yet feel I’ve earned the right to boast. Through the stupidity of others, and my own naivety, 2 years ago I was entirely broke. Since then I’ve build a formidable company, but it’s still in its infancy, and I’m only a very short way down this road. On the Thursday of the events I’ve described here, my company made more money than Junior Monster and Thick Shit (her husband) earn in a month combined. This gives me a mild satisfaction, but I don’t for a second think Junior Monster would believe a word of it.

But what happens when daddy is gone?

For this family I’m not sure it makes much difference since daddies company doesn’t seem to be doing very well at all. Like the rest of the construction sector, recession is the word of the moment, and the company accounts look a bit of a state (Junior and Senior no doubt remain blissfully ignorant.)

Junior has no control of the pittance her and her husband actually do earn (easy come, easy go and all that) and she is probably waiting for their parents to die, which is a very sad proposition, and may not pay dividends. She hides money from her husband, spends without telling him, and openly jokes about it.

A relative of mine was quite wealthy. She lived on an acreage property on the shoreline of Sydney harbour, probably worth an easy 8 figures. But when she died her children, who’d never been financially parented, pissed it up the wall within a few years. I expect the same will happen to this family once daddy is gone.

If you haven’t earned your way you have a disassociation with the money you spend since it’s such an easy commodity. Spending someone else’s money is easy, and with the disassociation you don’t care if you are paying £1400 for a pair of shoes, even if you wouldn’t dream of spending £1400 of your own money on shoes.

The family I’m talking about seems to be a new-money family. There is probably room for a separate discussion on the general difference between old money families, and new money families, but one of the fundamental differences is in how the children grew up, and if they’ve been taught to respect money.

I’ve always been wary of new-money, my old acquaintance Mark Attwood grew up in a council house and ended up sinking a ship to the tune of £1.5million in the red (officially reported as just under £1mil) – this in a company that could have operated with extremely tiny overheads.

Old Money families seem to educated their kids about money, and understand the importance of earning your own way. You’ll often hear old money parents talking about how they will make their children “work for it”. I’m extremely grateful for the financial education my dad gave me – the concept of compound interest gave me wet dreams as a kid.

New Money refuses to enjoy simple things in life. Some of the most enjoyable things are simple, but simple is incongruous with new money’s self image. Its sad to think someone wouldn’t enjoy a backpacking holiday simply because it’s not what they feel is “class appropriate” – if it’s not in a 5 star hotel, they don’t want it. That’s so sad… getting dirty, carrying your life around with you, and sharing with similarly free spirits is one of the best experiences anybody could hope for.

New Money cares more about appearance than quality. I’ve met new money wives who would prefer to wear 5-carat cubic zirconium rings rather than 0.25 carats of quality diamonds. Old money doesn’t care if other people don’t believe something is genuine, who cares! Disbelief of wealth is a sign of jealousy.

New Money judges others based on appearance, because surely if you have money you would spend it on bling? No? Appearance can be extremely deceptive – I know a guy who bought a £23k car, and has financially ruined himself for the next 5 years. He has the image of wealth, but nothing more. I know of another person who died with $2billion, but he lived in an average house and drove an average car. Nobody knew about his mind-boggling wealth, which he donated to charity upon his death.

Old Money is very careful with their lines of credit but new money doesn’t understand the difference and lives on credit cards and borrowings. Something goes wrong, and new money falls hard.

New Money seems to take less care of belongings, whereas old money seems to understand the value of everything. Throw your mobile phone about, reverse until the bumper of your car touches the wall, use scourers on a good quality Teflon pans… one of my pet hates… A lack of respect for things, shows a lack of respect for the money which paid for those things.

New Money is greedy and self-centred… I guess this stems from the days of having nothing and having to fend for themselves. Conversely some of the most generous people in the world are old money.

New Money thinks the world owes them something – it’s a lack of responsibility for their own lives which you also see in families who expect benefits from the government rather than going out and getting a job. I generally find old money family’s understand and appreciate they are very fortunate.

New Money is Fickle – it cares about the money, not intangibles like family and friends. This is probably the saddest of the lot… and their life suffers for it.

In the family I’m talking about I can’t blame daddy, and I actually respect a lot about the man. He looks out for his family unconditionally, and he’s obviously done well for himself. If only he’d exercised a bit of tough love.

I recently overheard Daddies employees laughing at the expense of Senior Monster - Certainly they have the appearance of wealth, but to live within that family would be the epitome of poverty.

I’ve payed a lot of tax recently, and in the past when my wife and I could have used help from “the system” (after Mark Attwood fucked me over), we were been denied because my English wife is married to me, an Australian… so when it comes to the subject of benefits, and people in generally complaining about things, I have a bit of a short fuse and strong opinions.

I’m a little baffled by the strikes in the UK… The UK strikes seem to be about two things – increases in the age at which someone can retire, and a “not big enough” pay increase for civil servants.

“From April 2016, women’s State Pension age will rise, equalising with men’s at 65 by November 2018″

Currently the retirement (pension) age for women is 60, and for men it’s 65. I’m all for equality, which is why I won’t complain that these ages are equalizing, even though women outlive men rather substantially (by 4.2 years on average, in fact). In theory, strictly speaking, the retirement (pension) age for women should be higher, but for whatever reason it’s been 5 years less than for men.

So, on point A) “Equalising Pension Age” I find it difficult to agree with the uk strikes.

The second big “boo raa” seems to be because the pension age is increasing from 65 (once the UK realizes equality) to 68… by 2046…

People retiring in 2021 will have to work 1 year longer, people retiring in 2037 will have to work 2 years longer, and people retiring in 2047 will have to work 3 years longer…

If we compare the increase in retirement age, with the increase in life expectancy…

In the past 10 years, life expectancy has increased by 2 years, in the next 10 years retirement age will increase by 1 year…. That’s a nice little two for one offer…

In the past 25 years, life expectancy has increased by 5.5 years, in the next 25 years the retirement age will increase by 2 years (Buy 1, get 2.75 free!)

In the past 35 years, life expectancy has increased by 7.3 years, in the next 35 years the retirement age will increase by 3 years (Buy 1, get 2.43 free!)

So, on point B) “Increasing retirement age” I can’t see how a reasonable person can complain, and again I can’t agree with the UK strikes. Work for a year, get 2.43 years paid holidays – cracking deal!

The final point on which UK civil servants are striking, is to do with pay increases for 2012. If I have understood correctly (and I haven’t done a whole lot of research into this) civil servants pay is only increasing by 1%, the argument being this isn’t enough in a country where inflation stands at 5%. I think the unions have chosen a very interesting figure with which to compare pay increases because, while inflation may indeed be at 5%, the UK economy certainly isn’t growing by 5% per year. In actual fact the economy is fairly stagnant, if not contracting.

When you take this into account, what public sector workers are striking for is to receive more money on average, than the average UK citizen.

Civil servants essentially are striking because they aren’t getting a disproportionately larger chunk of the pie.

Is this assessment realistic? Well, the more the government pays its staff, the more tax every other citizen has to pay to contribute to those wages. So yes, I think it is a pretty striking way to look at it. Take 1% away from non-gov workers, give that 1% to government workers, and that’s a 2% difference…

So, on point C) “Pay increases for civil servants”, frankly I think they are being greedy. Most probably don’t realize it, because the unions tell them what to think, which is unfortunate.

Now one final “this pisses me off” point…

I’m all for unions, and striking, and standing up for yourself… I’m well known to speak my mind (which upsets people who deserve to be upset), and I argue for whoever is right, often to my own detriment (I call myself a bit of a moral martyr… figjam).

That said…

I got chatting to my physiotherapist (I was playing paintball… it’s a long story) – she’s 24 and she doesn’t quite agree with the strikes. She told me doesn’t feel strongly enough about the issues in order to strike herself.

She wanted to stay at work and continue helping patients and I have a lot of respect for that… Do you think she had a choice?

If unions operate genuinely, with the best interests of its members as their primary goal, union members would be given a choice to strike…

Not my physio!!! Or anyone else in the NHS apparently. Their calendars were blocked out and they were told they couldn’t see patients on the 30th November. They essentially HAD to strike (or they could do extremely unappealing jobs in other areas of the hospital, either way they couldn’t do their own job and see patients).

It really rubs me up the wrong way that unions seem to be a form of dictatorship in which all members must follow the leader, regardless of their own beliefs and opinions. I think its foul, and I think it completely undermines the purpose of a union. Frankly, it pisses me off!

And its no isolated case – everybody seems to forget the mechanics behind having children.

“Little William was born today – Mother and Child are doing well” – what about bloody dad?

Dad’s probably got a burst eardrum from all the screaming, a broken hand from all the squeezing, and he’s never looking at his wife’s bits the same way ever again. The poor guy is probably shattered mentally and physically…
… or maybe people prefer to ignore the negatives on such a happy occasion.

Following on from my post Positively Ignorant, today I write another post regarding positivity, however this time I’m talking about the positive use of negativity.

I worked for a while within a business that had a heavily positive culture. The business was all about “Harmony” and “bigging each other up” etc. Now this was all well and good for perceived (and somewhat false) happiness, (until things went wrong,) but in terms of doing good business this proved to be a detrimental plan.

If you are too heavily into positivity and harmony you don’t leave yourself the room to “tell it how it is” – In business the problems then don’t get pointed out, hence they never get resolved. The dead wood never gets a chance to drift down stream and is instead tied to the boat with happy words and other such ego wanking.

In my personal experience even criticising the dead wood resulted in a shunning for disrupting the “vibe” – In my personal experience things didn’t turn out so well…

I now coin a phrase…

Positivity Blindness: “The desperate act of blindly ignoring all negatives”

These days I don’t have the same problem. If person “x” just isn’t doing a good job, something gets said. If there is a problem brewing within the business, something gets said. If I have a problem with a partner or colleague, it gets talked about and resolved. These days I feel unfathomably more relaxed because I KNOW WHERE I STAND.

This false “Harmony” also lead to a whole bunch of back stabbing. I personally found it incredibly stressful to never know exactly what was going on.

I believe relationships grow more during the bad times than during the good. It’s through passionate confrontation that we really learn to understand each other. If you have never fought with your life partner, how do you ever expect to get through any serious problems? Business partnerships are very similar to personal relationships with very similar opportunities for growth.

Don’t be afraid of negativity. If you can’t deal with it, then you shouldn’t really be feeling positive to begin with.

Vince

p.s. I’m now sitting in Schiphol airport feeling positively ill after my first MaccyD’s in five years… I now remember why I haven’t endured this horrible crap for such a long time. (That’s some positive negativity for you)

I must have been about 15, and “as fast as I could” was pretty bloody fast…

Especially since I was also cycling down hill…

And no - it wasn’t a mistake. I cycled directly towards the brick wall on purpose…

The mistake was attempting to repair the brakes on the bike myself… And then trying to do a huge burn-out…

What? Were you expecting a moral to the story? The friend that was watching found it all very funny “You went splat, and slid down the wall like in a cartoon” - I only remember having a very sore body, and having to repair a lot more than the brakes.

Ok Ok, a moral…

Brick walls are hard, and they hurt…

I’ve been reasonably astounded recently. In the past few weeks I’ve approached three individuals with exciting propositions in partnership with myself. Immediate money makers. Clear step by step systems to generate decent incomes. All with a $0 buy in and $0 to spend.

Not only that, I’ve offered these individuals, who have very basic internet marketing knowledge, my own time and guidance.

Two of the three haven’t been able to pluck up the motivation to move forward with these projects. They express extreme interest at the suggestion, but they just can’t get themselves motivated.
Personally I just don’t understand it. If somebody offers you guaranteed success, you bloody take it surely?

I don’t like to make money for myself. It may seem a little strange, but I’m just not interested in making money. I’m interested in bringing other people along for the ride. And there are so many brilliant opportunities, I like to bring as many people as possible into the lifestyle.

These systems that I’ve shared with these people, are money makers. I’ve tested them all myself, and they work. Not only do they work, they work really really well. When I’ve shown these individuals my results, they get VERY VERY excited…

But then it fizzles….

Is it a fear of success? Is it a disinterest in life?

Whatever it is, get over it and get on with living.

One of the three is a super star. I’ve known him for a long long time, since we ran an eBay business together when I was 16. He is an exceptional developer, and he’s taken a proposed concept and really started to roll with it. His progress is consistent, and his enthusiasm unwavering.

Dave Berry will be a millionaire.

So if you are working with others, burn the dead wood and keep looking for more super stars. The greatest satisfaction I can ever get is to bring others success, and I highly recommend it.

On Monday I jump on a plane back to Cambodia for two months to explore some exciting opportunities and team up with some old friends.
I bought the new Macbook last week in preparation – These things are sweet! The new multi-touch keypad is revolutionary to productivity! It’s the first time I’ve not felt restricted when using a touch pad rather than a normal mouse!
My flight transfers are a little close so I’m only taking hand luggage. Typical geek traveling with two laptops and no clothes… not a single item of clothing will find its way into my suitcase. When shirts cost £0.75, why bother?
I was worried the boys would miss me, so we have set up a permanent two way video conferencing link, and I can remote into my office workstation from my mac. This trip is going to be a good test of how easily we can work remotely. It’s also going to be a bit of fun sitting on a tropical beach with a laptop while the boys back in Manchester rug up and stay indoors.
Until Monday there won’t be a single sober night – tropics here I come!!!

British politics – what an intolerable faf! And the result is “The Apples and Oranges Coalition…”

My understanding of politics is limited and always has been – In Australia, where voting is compulsory, I never registered to vote and escaped the bother of walking to the poll booth a few hundred meters up the road. It’s only since I married a Brit that I’ve been exposed to British politics, and it’s only due to the ridiculousness of it all that I’m perking up and paying attention.

Apparently I could have voted, as a commonwealth citizen resident in the UK, but only discovered this on election day – a little bit late.

For the sake of my own understanding, I’ve dissected the names of the parties joined in coalition to garner a greater understanding of their general views and disparities.

Conservativism: “is a political and social philosophy that says that traditional institutions work best and society should avoid radical change” – I loath and detest conservatives. Women’s rights, gay rights, racial equality, etc… all hindered by conservatives.

Liberalism: “The belief of the importance of liberty and equality” – In Australia the Liberals are essentially the right wing conservatives, so it’s a bit of a mental exercise to give the Lib Dem’s a chance as a relatively left wing party. Interestingly enough, Liberalism is pro-equality, whereas conservatives are against change, including equality…

Democratic: “rule of the people or rule by many” – Considering Britain is apparently a democracy this ingredient is slightly mute. “We are all democrats” they would say…

One thing which has always done my head in about American politics is how left wing voters need to compromise in order to minimize damage – needing to vote for the best of the worst, the lesser of two evils.

On the 1st of November in 2004 Michael Moore wrote a letter to his list titled “One Day Left”. In the 2004 election left wing voters favoured Ralph Nader, but because everybody wanted Bush out so badly, even Nader’s own party told people to vote for Kerry.

“Ralph’s own party, the Green Party, would not endorse his run this year. That’s because those of us who want to build a third party in this country know that the only way to do this is to build bridges with those who believe in the issues Nader believes in. But not one of those people will sacrifice the chance to remove George W. Bush from the White House on Tuesday. The choice here is clear: do we join with our friends, or do we piss on them?”

The implication here is that by voting for Nader it reduces the chance to elect the lesser of two evils. Something is wrong in an electoral system where you have to vote for someone other than your primary choice for fear of undermining your “lesser of two evils”.

Just days prior to the general election, the Labour party in some constituencies was urging its voters to vote Liberal Democrats… to reduce the chance that the conservatives would win those seats. This sounds very similar to circumstances in the US.

Something is also wrong in an electoral system where a party can gain 23% of the total votes, but only 8.7% of seats in parliament – This doesn’t represent the publics choices.

Further, had Labour and the Lib Dems formed a coalition, with 52% of the total vote they still wouldn’t (according to British politics) hold a majority. Odd!

Something is also very wrong when just two parties get 99.01% of the total vote! This was the situation in the US in 2004, and there was no opportunity for a third party to join the fray. While this isn’t the case in the UK, simply due to the fact that you vote for your local candidate rather than a head figure, the inherent problems remain.

The fair and logical solution is preferential voting – “a type of ballot structure used in several electoral systems in which voters rank a list or group of candidates in order of preference”

And this is how it works: “First, all the number ‘1’ votes are counted for each candidate. If a candidate gets more than 50% of the formal first preference votes then they are immediately elected.

If no candidate has an absolute majority, the candidate with the fewest votes is excluded. These votes are then transferred to the other candidates according to the second preferences shown by voters on these ballot papers.

If still no candidate has an absolute majority, again the remaining candidate with the fewest votes is excluded and these votes are transferred. This process will continue until one candidate has more than half the total votes cast and is declared ‘elected’.”

The benefit here is that voters can vote for their primary choice, and then vote for their “lesser of two evils” with their second preference. Smaller parties and independent candidates now get a really honest chance to be elected, and voters don’t concede their need and right to both vote for their first choice, but also to cover their backs with a solid second choice.

Liberal Democrats voters are more likely to preference the labour party than they are conservatives, and if just the liberal democrats votes had been preferences, labour would have had the victory.

If labours votes in losing electorates were preferenced, the liberal democrats would have won twice as many seats.

The moronic british national party are more likely to preference the conservatives, but they get so few (ignorant) voters, they really aren’t worth considering.

As an example – in Dudley South where the conservatives won with 43.1% of the vote, labour scored 33% and the liberal democrats took 15.7% - It’s fair to guess the lib dem voters would rather Labour remain in power than the conservatives take the seat, and would more than likely preference labour – giving labour 48.7% of the votes. Split the 8.2% of UKIP votes down the middle, and Labour wins that seat!

This isn’t an isolated example, in fact it was the first conservatives seat I looked at. A more interesting seat is the Bridgwater & West Somerset constituency – where preferential voting would yield much much closer figures.

But moving on from electoral process – Liberal Democrats voters have been quite disappointed with their choice of coalition, but I think they’ve done something rather sneaky. They’ve turned their 57 seats into disproportionate power in government. Forcing a deal with the conservatives that is far less conservative than the English peoples would have had to put up with otherwise.

Would a lib-dem-labour coalition have been more appropriate? Their policies are more equal, but I think Nick Clegg simply used his bargaining position between the two parties to get the best deal for his and his parties voters.

Nick Clegg at question time will be interesting, answering questions from a lib dem perspective on behalf of the Apples and Oranges Coalition.

Its bizarre, its interesting, it British politics.

Location Independence is what us Internet people aspire to. Being able to work from anywhere in the world because all our affairs are managed online. Our accounts, invoicing, lead tracking and emails are all hosted online accessible from any internet connection, and our staff can be managed remotely.

Even phone lines can be diverted via VOIP to any internet connection.

To many people Location Independence simply means being able to take care of our affairs whenever we have access to the Internet. With the invention of the 3G Dongle we can sit on a park bench with our laptops and do what we need to do.

But I’ve hit barriers when I’ve wanted to share my 3G internet connection with others, and when visiting clients inside a buildings with poor mobile phone reception. And when we’re out in the bush, or in open fields, what happens when our laptop batteries run down?

The solution has been to run a wireless router in my car, which can stay connected and which can be accessed by multiple people within 50 meters (or more, if we are outdoors). I’m also running 240v power from my car battery which keeps the laptops charged.

These are the pieces of the In Car Wireless puzzle.

I need power: 150w 12v to 240v Car Power Inverter (Ebay)

And a 3G Internet Dongle (Funnily enough my provider is “3”)

And a 3G Router capable of connecting to 3G via a USB port: Netgear MBR624GU (Refurbished models available on ebay for £50)

By running a 3G dongle through a 3G router we can treble our 3G reception and hence internet speeds because there is more power running to the 3G dongle which can also be placed in a better position (like out of the sunroof as in the picture below.)

Myself and 10 others can share the internet connection wherever we are, which has been great for business sabbaticals. We roll down to the waters edge, fire up the 3G Wireless, and crack on with the important (and often bloody boring) tasks for the day.

Travelling for conferences or visiting clients we can run a strong steady wireless connection in the car and in hotel rooms. It just makes life so much easier, and more fun, and more relaxing.

I got a fantastic message today from a good friend in the US – We first started working together quite a few years ago when we were both in fledgling business ventures.

Me: “How’s Business”
Her: “Good, a little too good!”

That’s what I like to hear!

I’ve given her a lot of my own business over the years, and I’ve provided her with a lot of other peoples business too. In many cases I’ve helped her squeeze higher profit margins and sometimes still a commission for me. For the most part I’m referring other business friends to her on a “mates rates, no commission” basis.

We spoke at length about expanding her business – which she did by 45,000% in the space of a few months. We’ve maintained a great relationship.

I pay her immediately, I keep trying to find her more work, and in exchange she prioritizes my work and keeps my prices at rock bottom. This is invaluable in my business and helps me get higher profit margins while still undercutting the competition.

This is the story of one person – but I’ve got relationships with lots of similar business people who started off where I did, as a fledgling. To date, without exception, the businesses within my network who’ve embraced the concept and shared leads, services and resources, have grown substantially and profitably.

The point of this post is absolutely not to boast about this – more I’m describing a concept that I feel is extremely beneficial for business startups.

If fledgling startups work together generously, each will inevitable help the others succeed, thereby succeeding themselves.

In my opinion Greed is the biggest barrier to a successful business.

Paying yourself loads

Paying sales staff nothing with unattainable commissions structures

Driving down suppliers on price to a point of silliness

Being paranoid with ideas

Trying to charge stupid profit margins

Demanding commission on every referral

Getting more at the expense of your integrity

Come on people – I just have to write a pointed post about this.

NLP is fart… stinky hot air…

Yes – NLP is making a lot of people a lot of money, but they are the NLP “Expert Practitioners” (which means they spent a week in a room osmosing regurgitatable bullshit.) and they are making money by pyramid scheme style proliferation of untested unproven somewhat ridiculous wank.

“Neuro-Linguistic Programming” is one of those “The Law Of Attraction” style hype names with absolutely no scientific basis.

You aren’t programming anything

It has nothing to do with neurons

“Linguistic” could be used in a name for NLP, but that name would have to be more like “hyping deficient linguistic accuracy

Props to the manipulative illiterate cash greedy motherfuckers that came up with the name, making dyslexia glamorous – its brilliant! It sounds like a controllable science…

A few points I would like to make:

Isn’t your life brutally sad if you need to manipulate people to your will?

Aren’t you a bit of an arsehole to be offering people a serving of bullshit under the guise of helping them? (This goes both for teaching NLP, and “practicing” NLP)

Have you ever read NLP’ed sales copy? It just doesn’t make sense! Further, to completely debunk the concept, it doesn’t perform anywhere near as well as real English and traditional (linguistically accurate) sales copy in multivariate testing!

What does linguistics have to do with body and eye movement? Linguitics relates to verbal communication, not body language?

Non-Verbal Communication…
There is nothing linguistic about what is being communicated by this old lady.. except for the linguistic interpretation… “Fuck You NLP Scammy Bastards”

As per religions, “the law of attraction” and all these other bullshit hypes, it requires a certain lack of emotional intelligence to have any belief or faith – it requires a wilful ignorance.

Wouldn’t the world be lovely if we could turn people into whatever we liked (refer to my post positively ignorant) and then (using NLP) manipulate our creations to suit our will… I was thinking that could be quite fun, but really if everyone has similar abilities it could become a complete riot!

I’m all for placebo – But I can’t stand a placebo which professes to be anything other than a placebo. Homeopathy for instance…

Acupressure… doesn’t cure your cold… even most acupuncturists (the ones who believe sticking needles in your body helps, which really only has measurable placebo effects) use acupressure only as a guidance for acupuncture.

Acupressure
Stops you getting another cold by making you look like such a gullible fool that you will never go outside without a coat again, for fear of further public ridicule… “Dude, you’ve got seeds stuck to your ear”

Sometimes ignorance is a choice…

Every speaker at every seminar, be it for entrepreneurs, internet marketers, business people or for those interested in the effect of rotten leaves on modern society, is pushing this positivity stuff.
“The Secret” is a DVD which seems to be mentioned at every single event, as well as on every second blog. It talks about positive thinking and the law of attraction. I’ll get back to this…

I love positivity, and I love realistic forms of the law of attraction (from here on, just TLOA) – I believe strongly that positive people attract other positive people. I also know that if you truly believe you will achieve a certain goal, you will subconsciously gear your life around attaining that goal. Many decisions will be made with that goal subconsciously (or consciously) in mind, and you are therefore a LOT more likely to achieve said goal.

But here’s the problem…

“The Secret” discredited itself by hyping the theory. It was simply taken too far. Positive thinking ALONE will not cure your cancer. It has been scientifically proven that positive thinking can greatly increase your chances of surviving any medical hurdle, but positive thinking alone will just get you dead.

All this TLOA stuff is almost a new form of religion. An excuse to ignorantly believe in something which makes you feel better about your life and living. Now I hear you say “But ‘The Secret’ is true because of quantum physics”…

Whoopla what a buzz word (or words) – Quantum Physics… This sounds super cutting edge and scientific, it must be true…

Unless you’ve chosen the enlightened path and actually looked into quantum physics. I think this is where I went a little wrong when it comes to TLOA, I chose not to be ignorant.

By observing particles, you alter them. True – this does not therefore mean that if you think your cancer away, it will go away. The study of quantum physics is still far too primitive to make any assertation that positive thinking can alter particle states to the extent that you can wish your malignant tumour away. And if this were the case, could you not also be accidentally wishing for the creation of more cancers?

You can’t chance particle states to what you want them to be by observing them, you simply change them. I mean, I really want you to be a nice thin 5’ 3” blond girl with blue eyes and C cup breasts, but that’s (very unfortunately) just never going to happen.

And here’s the thing – if your positive thinking can alter the particles within your own body, then also within anybody else’s body. A new form of prayer will be born, and all of my dreams will come true. Can you imagine all those poor fat old men that suddenly have to deal with bra shopping and tampons… Life becomes a Lego set and people live forever.

I can hear myself now saying “Lay off my gender, I liked it the way it was!” or even “Hey! I needed that bit!”
So like religion, taking this positive thinking and TLOA stuff to the extreme, there is a great unknown which leaves us ignorant. For instance… who/what created god?

I know of a few people who actively persued TLOA and positive thinking to cure cancer… More to the point, I KNEW a few people… you get my drift.

And what about the name of this thing…

The LAW of Attraction – It’s a LAW! It must be true… Of course “The Theory Of Attraction” or “The Hypothesis Of

The Law Of Attraction” doesn’t have the same ring to it, and as a marketer I can respect the placement of a very authoritive word within the name of a speculation. Personally I would have gone with “The Law of Quantum Physical Attraction” – Argue with that one! Clever, but still bullshit.

Positive thinking and being a positive person WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE – this is absolutely and completely true - Trusting the extreme claims of these “laws” ignorantly… well… good luck with that but you’ve just lost my respect.

Regards,

Vince

p.s. I’m sitting on a train to Amsterdam. The railway line is lower than the water level on the parallel canal. Its very cool, if somewhat disconcerting.

How many people do you know that work an average job, live in an average house and drive an average car? They have one average holiday per year with their 2.3 children.

If someone were to ask me that question, the answer would be “the vast majority” - which is why these people fall into the “average” box.

Below the average group we have the “less fortunate” (I’m being politically correct here, catch me with a beer and you might hear a more blatant opinion) and above average we have the privileged.

Wealth isn’t calculated in dollars, its calculated in quality of life. As such, people who have never done anything for their money still fall into the “average” box as far as I’m concerned.

So what makes us DIY/Entrepreneurs different from Joe (first name average)?

I was sitting with friends and family having dinner today excitedly telling the people close to me about how on the internet we can effectively invest $5, and earn $15.

THEY JUST DON’T CARE!!!

Joe doesn’t want to be different, Joe isn’t interested in exceeding, Joe is just satisfied… and thats it.

I’ve floated ideas to Joe’s many times, and each time, even if Joe understands the idea, nothing ever comes from it.

Looking back, I once started an online newspaper with a journalist friend, she republished two articles which were 6 months old, and despite the attention our little news site received, she lost interest and never wrote for it again.

I am absolutely convinced had we continued with the plan, recruiting other journalists to write with us (in partnership rather than on salary) our little news site would have some major value two years down the line, enough for each of us to retire.

This project never got off the ground because after 80 hours of commitment on my part building the site, this journalist spent 15 mins emailing me two old articles. Her name was Joe.

I had an ebay business when I was 16, in partnership with another friend. We were buying old computers at auction, reconditioning them and then selling them on through ebay. We were earning a very good income, and the business was growing as each weeks profits allowed us to buy more stock.

After four weeks, despite our success and the easy money we earned, my friend lost interest. His name was Joe and I ended up buying a bunch of remote control airplanes, a new computer and 6 weeks overseas.

I once wrote an passionate post on a popular technology site suggesting talented web developers team up together working in our free time to build an online empire. From 62 replies, one person, Tom, was positive about the idea, 61 were flamers. I think they were all called Joe.

What I experienced tonight was Joe’s disinterest in anything more than average. A disinterest in new ideas and ways to be more than just a Joe. I haven’t been used to this, having worked with four other brilliant entrepreneurs during the last 6 months.

Unlike Joe, my colleagues Mark Attwood, Kenny Goodman, Donal Doherty and Nathan Ridley get excited about new ideas. They laugh, they giggle, they jump up and down (Mark even does cartwheels)! They have a passion for being and doing more!!! (They also have google alerts on their names hi guys!)

So my question to you is: What is your name in 2009?

With the new year coming in, its traditional to set some goals for what we would like to acheive in the year ahead.

Many people will aim to quit smoking, or lose weight. Another group aim to earn $xxx, xxx in the year ahead, or buy a house, or a car. Unfortunately I don’t smoke, and I’m already a little bit too skinny, I’m not bothered with my income as its more than sufficient, and I don’t know which country I would like to buy my first house in, so I’m not fussed with that one either.

I’m a little different

In 2009 I want to increase the power, size and capability of the Manchester Mob SEO lab.

I would like to be working with:

A team of 20 in house copy writers, in addition to our teams overseas.

A team of 10 talented personal assistants to do as I command “try this, do that”

5 folk managing online assets…

And finally, 5 additional developers producing tools to enable the world domination we have planned.

We already have a wonderful (and powerful) Internet Marketing team, lead by Mark Attwood, Kenny Goodman, Donal Doherty, Nathan Ridley and myself. I have a wonderful assistant Rick, and other notable characters in the team include Tehera, Kayt, Louise, John, Jay, Steve and Alex. I would like to wish all of the team a very very happy new year, and I hope you are all prepared for the ride ahead. It will be WONDERFUL!

So there are my goals set in the ether of the web - no luck is required, just hard work and a lot of fun!

Best wishes for 2009 everyone!
