Have you touched on the recent changes by google yet? The idea that all sites must have fantastic content and social metrics and all of that.
What about the guys that want to make micro-niche sites, write on 50 different keywords, link it up, make some youtube videos, and build links, without being experts on the topic? Do you think these kind of people will be exctinct? Is the only strategy now to become an expert on a topic, something you’d feel comfortable about spreading out to your Google Circles?
What if I want to push a yeast infection clickbank product? Now I need to be the master of yeast infections, blogging out to my friends and family about it? What’s your take on all of this?

- Simon

Hi Simon,

A lot of people got burnt recently, including a load of self professed SEO experts. I think the simple facts regarding the recent shit storm are that a few link building services were specifically targeted and nuked. Lazy SEO which relied on those networks suffered with sites bombing it overnight.

But actually nothing has changed. I think the webmaster tools messages people got (I got only one, from a few hundred sites) are literally a info gathering bluff… “tell us which sites you bought links form” - yeah right!

Google isn’t in a position to process all the data required to really make the most of social media etc etc etc, and the world online is too immature to start imposing “must”s - in 20 years maybe. Its all simply scare tactics and manipulation - nobody has been able to prove negative SEO is possible, and if it was it would be extremely easy to prove.

Crack on with whatever you’re doing I say - everything helps, but nothing is required.

By popular request, my thoughts about SEO in 2012.

Social Media becomes SEO

I usually mull over posts like this for a few days adding and removing pieces, reshuffling etc. This particular post has been in draft since about christmas - The below “Social Media becomes SEO” section was written prior to Google’s announcement this morning (Wed 11th Jan) which has been hailed as “most radical transformation ever” - I’ve left what I’ve written unchanged.

For a little while Google had access to the twitter hose pipe, which meant tweets could be dynamically included in rankings, and used as a ranking metric. I’ve done a lot of testing in the past 12 months with large volumes of tweets and retweets (between 200-400 tweets in each test) and at the time I did the test, there was absolutely no affect on rankings whatsoever. Just a few months prior, when Google still had access to the hose pipe, another popular SEO website asked readers to help with testing retweets for rankings, and found them to be quite effective.

Facebook has had a slim effect on SEO because profiles can’t be indexed, and there is no clear crawl path through profiles.

Also last year Google launched its own new social network, Google Plus. From a user interface point of view Google Plus is highly integrated with other google products, such as Gmail and Search. Google seems to have become frustrated with the failure of google buzz, and not having its own social network, and seems to be throwing absolutely everything into the success of Google Plus.

It stands to reason Google will use the data from its newest product to influence search, as this is a search metric Google has been desperately seeking.

I’m not going to share my own tests at this stage, but suffice to say I’ve been looking very heavily into Google Plus for SEO.

The SEO Puzzle

In the old days it used to be a matter of how many times you listed your keywords on your page, and how many backlinks you had with those keywords. These days SEO seems to be more about ticking a bunch of boxes, and not always how many ticks you put in each box.

Its almost as if the rankings are based on a points system. 10 links might give you 1 point, 100 links might give you 2 points, 1000 links might give you 3 points. But having SEO friendly URL’s might give you a point, having a robots.txt file might give you 1 point, having an RSS feed might give you 1 point, Adding the site to webmaster tools might give you 1 point and having keyword optimised images might give you 1 point. Existing for 1 year might give you1 point, existing for three years might give you 2 points, existing for 10 years might give you 3 points. And etc…

The reason this seo puzzle theory has come about is because I’ve been in numerous industries where I’ve had 10,000 backlinks, and keyword density to be proud of, but I can’t seem to leap-frog a website with 100 links, and very average keyword density. There doesn’t always seem to be rhyme nor reason behind the search results, which leaves me wondering if the SEO puzzle theory has legs.

Back to Basics

Over the past few years the basic SEO techniques seem to have lost power, leaving us SEO’s feeling a little powerless to affect improvements. In the past 6 months or so things seem to have gone “back to basics” and many of the old techniques, done right, are working well. Possibly this is just the result of Google loosening up the time based part of the algorithm to allow more dynamic changes within search.

One possibly explanation could be that instead of working with one algorithm, google has multiple algorithms to serve each portion of the search results. For example there is obvious a natural SERP algorithm, and a PPC algorithm, and now there is probably also a Social algorithm, probably separate Image algorithms and Video algorithms too. Each individual algorithm then becomes less important to the full serps, so they can slacken off a bit.

Roundup from 2011:

Split Testing - yes - still happening

User Voting - has evolved into social search

Synonym Match - not so much, but still a factor

Exact match domain names - agree with my 2011 seo guide

Other TLD’s - 50:50 on this one…

Roundup from 2010:

Time - very important

User Experience - very important

Reverse Page Rank - certainly some data to suppor the idea

Variation - yes, still important

Contant - Yes, as always

Ramp - Yes, still the case.

PR Sculpting - Lost to the pages of history

The most unfortunate thing about SEO is that it is unpredictable, fickle and frustrating as hell…

First time around not everyone will have a good experience. Their taste for SEO will bitter and, understandably, they swear off SEO forever.

SEO can also take one heck of a long time, with noticeable changes being sporadic and unpredictable. I was about to start telling you about a client who, after 4 months, was getting frustrated with a lack of improvements. As luck would have it, a quick rank check showed that all of a sudden rankings have improved drastically across the board.

I guess good news tells the story just as well as bad news, the point being that things can appear to be entirely stagnant, and all of a sudden something will change….

If somebody bails from SEO before the sudden, seemingly random positive results, they may never see those improvements. The reason being, if you stop SEO at any point, there is a generally slow but definite negative trend in rankings and traffic.

In other cases on a relatively new SEO campaign (less than 18 months old) stopping SEO can cause your rankings and traffic to absolutely plummet. This depends somewhat on the SEO techniques employed, but the only difference this will have is the rate of decline. Often the fastest methods for being ranked, are also the methods which fall the hardest if discontinued.

A prime example is that of self proclaimed "SEO Expert" Mark Attwood and the story behind his apparent success (which ended in administration to the tune of over -£1mil) who’s company "TopSkips", a brokerage model business run on 50% SEO traffic, 50% PPC traffic (unprofitably) used to be #1 in the UK for the popular term "Skip Hire" - when I left the company, the rankings of "TopSkips" and associated companies slowly fell. The volume and quality of the SEO on Mark’s companies decreased so drastically that is was no longer sufficient to keep up with the competition and positions were lost, including the #1 for "Skip Hire".

The number of indexed pages on "TopSkips" fell to 10% (from approx 100,000 to about 10,000) within a few months and an absurdly large number of SEO rankings have been lost.

I’ve seen it too often where a company invests in SEO for a short period of time (less than 18 months) and decides (prematurely) not to continue. Instead of continual improvement the initial SEO is lost to the wind within a few months.

Possibly the single biggest key to SEO success is continual improvement, both of a website, and of the backlink profile to the website. If instead of improving you are regressing, this will be reflected in the search rankings, traffic and profitability.

SEO is a long hard road, stick with it and don’t give up.

After the recent decommissioning of yahoo site explorer, alternatives need to be found so that we can track our own backlinks, and spy on competitors backlinks.

Below is a short list of SEO Tools which can, together, provide a somewhat viable alternative to yahoo site explorer.

Bing Webmaster Tools

Frankly I haven’t used Bing Webmaster Tools, but as the official alternative to yahoo site explorer one hopes it would have much, if not all of the same data as yahoo site explorer displayed. The biggest issue with Bing Webmaster Tools is that it is a tool for webmaster only, whereas yahoo site explorer allowed users to view the backlinks and backlink counts for any and all websites.

At this point in time I can’t comment on the usefulness of Bing Webmaster Tools as a yahoo site explorer alternative for webmasters, because I haven’t used it, however as an alternative for competitor analysis it is a completely useless tool.

Google Webmaster Tools

Google Webmaster Tools is only a yahoo site explorer alternative for webmasters, as google webmaster tools has only ever been available to the sites owner. In this respect I think Google Webmaster Tools is more comprehensive than yahoo site explorer ever was.

Majestic SEO

Without paying for an account, the only information you can get for free is the number of total backlinks, referring domains, and C Class IP addresses. I have doubts about the accuracy of Majestic SEO’s data, but in respect to the number of links a website has for competitor analysis (the link count) Majestic SEO is probably the most accurate and consistent alternative to yahoo site explorer.

Google Links Search

If you use the search links:domainname.com in a standard google search, you will get a short list of sites linking to that domain name. The problem is this list is minuscule and doesn’t even reflect 1% of the links Google actually knows about (which we can compare as a webmaster, with the links in webmaster tools). It can be vaguely interesting, and it is only important in this day and age where yahoo site explorer is down and decommissioned, as one of the seo tools we can use to fill in the blanks.

Alexa

Alexa gives you a rather vague "sites linking in" feature which actually gives you a better list of linking sites than you get from the Google Links: search mentioned above. In a world before we needed and alternative to yahoo site explorer the data alexa provided was entirely redundant, but now it is again, another seo tool to help us piece the SEO puzzle together.

Open Site Explorer

Open site explorer is probably the best like for like yahoo site explorer alternative. It allows us to gather details on other sites, as well as our own. I don’t like the data for backlink counts, and in general I find Open Site Explorer a little clumsy to work with, but in an imperfect world we are left with imperfect SEO tools.

I recently posted a question to Matt Cutts regarding the no-follow tag:

“Do you feel that the widespread and blanket use of nofollow tags is devaluing Google’s search algorithms? Examples such as Wikipedia, where ALL external links are nofollow. Does Wikipedia mean nothing to Google’s algorithms?”

Let’s break Matt’s answer down a little.

First off, Matt states that there are very few links using the no-follow tag and that these links represent a minuscule percentage of all links on the web.

While this may be the case, its worth noting that authority sites have actively taken on the no-follow tag, while inactive rubbish sites, which represent the vast majority of sites online, haven’t even been updated since the tag was released.

It’s a pity the question was bundled with another question relating to no-follow tags on wikipedia since my question was more a general statement regarding the blanket use of no-follow on outbound links from authority sites.

Matt continues by saying “Don’t bother spamming wikipedia” – which illustrates that relating this question to wikipedia specifically dilutes the question, a mistake on my part. There has never been any doubt in anybodies mind that spamming isn’t a good plan, so lets move on…

There is a great deal of deterrent value to using no-follow tags on sites with user generated content, however there has to be a point when regardless of the no-follow tag, that link represents some value.
What about non-user generated content? News sites etc? Edu’s Gov’s Medical Institutions? All the best webmasters are using luscious servings of no-follow.

In some cases greed steps in the way with webmasters wanting to funnel page rank to their own pages, too tight to pass on a bit of love (the fabric on which Google is built.)

Essentially respecting all no-follow tags DOES devalue Googles algorithms because Google no longer pays attention to [a percentage of] links from authority sites.

I hope this suggestion is addressed at some stage.

News hit today that 36 minutes of the new Harry Potter movie, “Harry Potter and the deathly hallows” was leaked. When I first heard the news I turned to my wife (Also an Internet Marketer) and said “I bet it’s the first bit of the movie, and I bet its not a leak)

I’m going to make another prediction, and that is that nobody will be “caught” or punished for the harry potter leak. The reason?

I don’t believe the first half of the new harry potter movie was leaked. I think it’s a very clever marketing stunt, and I think instead of there being an investigation and punishment, there will instead be a big bonus landing in somebody’s bank account.

I’ve “leaked” dvds in the past for marketing purposes with fantastic results. Fantastic for building reputation and buzz.

Consider this, today is the 18th, one day before the official release of the harry potter movie on the 19th – how does one get widespread international coverage for free?

Harry Potter and the Dealthy Hallows got into the international media just 24 hours before the movie was set to be officially released. This fantastically reminds everyone the movie is out tomorrow.

Further, who want’s to watch just the first half of a movie? Could this be a marketing ploy to drive people to the cinemas? Could this be an attempt to bring people who would normally download the movie into the cinemas? I’m guessing “yes” on both counts.

As an experiement, for educational purposes only, this is where people are able to download leaked harry potter here - don’t download it, that would be copyright infringement. But if Warner Brothers are serious about this being a genuine leak… a) that’s very short sighted of them & they could be more progressive in their marketing, and b) I’ll receive a cease and desist letter for providing the above link.

I’ll keep you updated, but if they don’t get in touch, I think we can safely assume this was a very clever marketing stunt.

I wrote recently (just 1 month and 1 week ago) about some inspirational SEO results and I thought I would provide an update. To refresh your memory, I was looking at my ranking for a single word keyword with over 1000 daily searches. Heres the Market Samurai Keyword Research report for that keyword.

Not exactly a low competition keyword……

To refresh your memory here is the SEO competition matrix produced by Market Samurai from the original report:

There I am in 9th position…

And now for the update…

There I am in 4th and 5th positions…

Yahoo definitely isn’t reflecting the amount of back-linking that’s gone into this project, but the entire SEO campaign to date has been worth around £2000. And this isn’t the only ranking which was achieved within this campaign.

I’ve been tracking the top 25 highest traffic keywords for this market and here are the best rankings so far… 3rd, 5th, 6th, 9th, 9th 10th, 11th, 13th, 16th, 16th, 19th 27th, 37th, 44th, 78th, 197th

Tracking the top 100 keywords I’ve already achieved an astonishing 13 first position rankings and 44 top 10 rankings. All well and good if there’s no traffic - here’s the weekly traffic trends…

A pretty normal SEO Campaign Traffic Trend Graph on a hardcore SEO campaign… waves with ever increasing tops and diminishing troughs…

So where to from here? Well obviously I need to continue focusing on the top traffic keywords as well as broadening the SEO campaign, but I’ve just started to monetize this site with amazon affiliate deals - its also getting a whopping 13.53% adwords CTR (I miss-tweeted 13.35% this morning…)

Continual improvement is the name of the game, and following additional site changes and refinements I will be approaching drop-shippers so that I can take orders directly, dictating my own profit margins and thereby increasing profit percentages dramatically. I haven’t even considering CRO (Conversion Rate Optimization) yet.

This is my new business workflow:

1. Build an empty shop

2. Get people walking through the door

3. Hang some advertising on the wall

4. Keep directing more visitors through my shop

5. Stick some trinkets on the shelves

6. Keep directing more visitors through my shop

7. Replace the trinkets with bigger and better products

8. Keep directing more visitors through my shop

9. Find ways to make people buy and spend more

10. Build another empty shop…

I will be publishing my methods in the “The Real Guide” but in the mean time I’m open to folks popping forward with investment cash and benefiting from my methods and implementation. I’ll do it cheap in a 50:50 JV deal, or expensively if you want to retain 100% shares.

The unpublished price list above 25,000 email addresses goes like this:

25,001 to 50,000 at an additional $100 per 25,000 records

25,000 increments to 150,000 and then 50,000 email address increments beyond 150,001 at $200 per 50,000 records.

If you are importing lists in excess of 25,000 email addresses (this is me) there is a standard one time $300 setup fee. This is sold as a “value added” service… I couldn’t make sense of the value, other than all the other things I could do with $300

So to circumvent the setup fee, just upload the first 20,000 records and then upload your remaining data. $300 saved!

If you follow this link http://www.constantcontact.com/index.jsp?cc=dssnelson you get a 60 day trial and the very nice sales lady “Sarah” gets a signup to her name. I liked her, and since I just stiffed her for $300, she deserves it.

Its very very simple – facebook is a closed community of friends. Twitter is a massive data stream open for everyone to explore.

Facebook can’t do hash tags, and even if it could, the accessible data set would be so tiny it would be stupidly useless.

So after weeks of trying to enjoy the new facebook 3.0 layout, giving it a chance like I did the facebook 2.0 layout (and ended up loving 2.0) – facebook 3.0 is a big flop for me.

But huge props facebook for trying to improve the experience continually.

Over the last few weeks I’ve come to realize money doesn’t mean anything to me. It enables me yes, but having money just isn’t on my agenda. My real passion is working with people I like, and enabling other smart people to do what they want and love. Karma will take care of me in the end, and I have complete faith that my helping you, will pay back in a big way.

So consider this post a promise to show you exactly how I’m earning true passive income. Its crazy easy, anybody can do it, and it works. Literally $1 in, $20 out… per month…

When I first started doing this I had a moment of complete disbelief. Within a week I was earning the average wage of an entire Cambodian family. If only the third world had access to this stuff, lives would be changed. And not just a little. Lives would be literally CHANGED.

No selling, No SEO, No PPC, not even traffic. Sounds too good to be true right? Maybe that’s because this is brand new and fresh. I’ve come up with this strategy myself and I’ve only told about 4 people how its done.

This is pure, free, quality content, with no bullshit, email signups, squeeze pages or opt-ins.

Your success will make me happy, and Karma will keep me alive.

I’ve been reasonably astounded recently. In the past few weeks I’ve approached three individuals with exciting propositions in partnership with myself. Immediate money makers. Clear step by step systems to generate decent incomes. All with a $0 buy in and $0 to spend.

Not only that, I’ve offered these individuals, who have very basic internet marketing knowledge, my own time and guidance.

Two of the three haven’t been able to pluck up the motivation to move forward with these projects. They express extreme interest at the suggestion, but they just can’t get themselves motivated.
Personally I just don’t understand it. If somebody offers you guaranteed success, you bloody take it surely?

I don’t like to make money for myself. It may seem a little strange, but I’m just not interested in making money. I’m interested in bringing other people along for the ride. And there are so many brilliant opportunities, I like to bring as many people as possible into the lifestyle.

These systems that I’ve shared with these people, are money makers. I’ve tested them all myself, and they work. Not only do they work, they work really really well. When I’ve shown these individuals my results, they get VERY VERY excited…

But then it fizzles….

Is it a fear of success? Is it a disinterest in life?

Whatever it is, get over it and get on with living.

One of the three is a super star. I’ve known him for a long long time, since we ran an eBay business together when I was 16. He is an exceptional developer, and he’s taken a proposed concept and really started to roll with it. His progress is consistent, and his enthusiasm unwavering.

Dave Berry will be a millionaire.

So if you are working with others, burn the dead wood and keep looking for more super stars. The greatest satisfaction I can ever get is to bring others success, and I highly recommend it.

Dear Google,

I can’t live without you, but lately I don’t feel like you love me anymore. Together we are making each others lives richer, but I just don’t feel like you respect me in this relationship.

I love the colour of your i’s (or o’s… whatever), and I love the traffic you give me like a bunch of roses. We both get what we need from this relationship and it should be a two way street.

Why then do you banish me to the couch when you are grumpy with me for whaling on you? Every man needs to check his rankings once in a while, but it hurts when you 403 me mid way through. You turn the euphoria of the experience into pain when you don’t let me finish, and it makes me feel like less of a man.

If you don’t want me to whale on you, you shouldn’t be such a star fish.

Why is it a bad thing to want to know how deep I am inside you? I know its vain to measure, but I have no other way to know how I compare to all the other men (and women) in your life…

I don’t want to have to cheat on you with proxies… I don’t think that is the right thing to do in a relationship with problems. It’s also hard to find proxies who love me and don’t time out every time I call them… And I refuse to pay for the service…

Right right, and now I’ve made you cry! Why do you always do this? I’ve had to captcha your heart so many times!

Fine, be like that, I’m going over to yahoo’s place for a while. Gullible little slut that she is!

I know you aren’t going to call me when you want me back, so I’ll just come by in a few hours like your little lap dog.

With all my heart,

I’ve barely read a Google white paper or patent, and in that regard I can’t mingle with SEO gurus the likes of Aaron Wall, Rand Fishkin, Leslie Rohde, Barry Schwartz, etc… I can’t talk about theoretical formula A, and equation B…

And I prefer it that way…

SEO is a simple concept, yet blowhard X will talk about method Y and the result is BS…

X+Y = BS

Many of the top SEO’s only implement the “Read And Regurgitate” techniques while others throw in a touch of the “Nobody knows for sure, so I’ll say something that sounds good” method….

Blowhard SEO’s use complex names to keep this simple art exclusive…

But really… This is SEO:

1.	Make sure your pages are optimized as much as possible
2.	Make sure your internal pages interlink intelligently
3.	Build links with good anchor text, from good sources

BS Method A:

“Analyse your competitors backlinks, and copy them…”

NO! Spend your time getting the links you can get. There is more than one way to beat the competition, and there are a hell of a lot of other places where you can get links. Don’t waste your time doing things the hard way, since competitor backlink analysis is an imprecise art, especially since not every link is visible to you and you can’t get every single one anyway!

BS Method B:

Analyse your competitors keyword density, and copy them…

NO! Make sure the content on your page contains keywords while still making sense to the reader. Do not compromise user experience for keyword density, and don’t cut down density to match your competitors. In truth a 30% keyword density will work, and a 2% density will beat that 30% density with intelligent internal linking and backlink building.

BS Method C:

“Link baiting… Viral content… etc…”

NO! Its literally gambling… you spend money, and the results are completely unpredictable. Chances of going viral and you getting an ROI are miniscule.

BS Method D:

Focus on one keyword at a time…

NO! There are thousands of keywords that are relevant for every single one of your pages and your site will receive more traffic, sooner, by link building with variety. A good proportion of “bad” anchor text also helps you fly under the “SEO” radar.

BS Methods E:

Anything fancy pants…

NO! Google isn’t stupid, and fancy pants methods generally have some kind of footprint. No-Follow internal linking… with Javascript… or iFrames… or Flash… or Ninja Turtle Nunchaku Links! You just end up waving a big “I’m trying to game Google” flag…

Instead of theorizing, implement!

Instead of analyzing, implement!

Your TIME and MONEY is ALWAYS best spent IMPLEMENTING!!!

But why listen to the guy who doesn’t read the white papers and get his physics professor buddies to explain the formulas?

I get results through implementation – they might not be the most elegant results, and I might over-run rather than nudge the tipping point gently, but I get results. If I don’t get a result, I keep adding pages and building links until I DO get a result – and anybody can do that! The rate of implementation (which you would have to do anyway) isn’t hindered by theorizing, analyzing and playing with myself…

I don’t read and regurgitate, I implement, implement, implement!

I don’t waste my time getting confused over unpublished formulas and algorithms, I just implement and track results…

Dear SEO’s – Stop faffing, and start DOING!

“Guru Marketing” – positioning oneself as a “Guru” in ones field.

Profit Driven

Guru Marketing is all about one thing… generating profits. Nothing else matters, not quality of content, not originality, not even truth. Sales funnels identify buyers from non-buyers, and push endless products on those buyers, regardless of the value being offered. And it gets taken to a complete extreme, like £24,000 weekends where the “Guru” doesn’t even personally contribute. A person of expertise doesn’t try to sell you things for the sake of selling you things.

Egotistical

“Guru’s” develop mammoth egos. You dare not question, disagree with, judge, contradict or discredit a Guru. Guru’s will only tolerate the groupies and approach resistance almost psychopathically. The holier than thou attitude displayed by the vast majority of “Guru’s” is frightening. They become unapproachable in their own self created celebrity. A person of expertise is not afraid of criticism and debate, and rather embraces it as a source of further development. “It’s through heated debate that we knowledge create”

Out of touch

Guru’s are simply making too much money being Guru’s and therefore lose touch with the subject matter they are supposedly experts in. I know of a Marketing Guru who has never had any business other than his self branding as a Guru teaching (regurgitating) marketing strategies which said Guru has never personally experienced. What is that about? I know of other Guru’s whose course content hasn’t changed for five years in rapidly evolving markets such as Internet Marketing. Guru’s who haven’t done any internet marketing for five years, save for marketing their internet marketing materials. A person of expertise should have continued experience and exposure to the subject matter they choose to teach, with proven success to back up relevant experience.

Rehashed

Because Guru’s are out of touch, and because Guru’s are so heavily profit driven, they end up Rehashing old content and re-selling it under a slightly different guise to the “buyers”. Guru’s also need to appear to be on the ball and fresh, so you often see a product with slight modifications being released as “Snakeoil 2!” or “Snakeoil Reloaded!” or “Snakeoil Supercharged!”. A person of expertise doesn’t look to rehash old information, rather searches for new information.

Crowd Sourcing

A personal gripe of mine. Guru’s have a terrible habit of leeching from their following. If a celebrity asks you to do them a favour, many people would love to do that favour just to be associated with said celebrity. While the “Guru” is more than able to pay for the service (due to profits from rehashed crap) their overinflated ego’s make them believe they are doing somebody a favour by using that person. Egotistical reasoning being “Bob can do my dirty laundry because it’s a great boost for Bob to be in contact with me” – In crowd sourcing I’ve seen it all, from free road trips to free full time mundane secretarial work. A true expert expects to pay for every single service they require.

Bullshit

Guru’s are essentially bullshitters. If they say they are, and market themselves as such, the vast majority of people will believe it to be true. They fake their way to self declared Guru status. They are out of touch but declare themselves to be the number a cutting edge expert. Guru’s no longer practice what they preach. Rehashed products are sold as original unique material. Old information is sold as new. Using people who admire you via crowd sourcing is bullshit! A true expert can’t be accused of any of the above.

Conclusion

A true expert doesn’t have to resort to professing to be a guru.

A level of expertise is reached by peer review, not self promotion.

An expert practices what they preach, and ceases to be an expert when they cease to exercise that expertise.

A true expert is self assured enough in their expertise to welcome debate.

A true expert only needs to release new material.

A true expert pays for services rather than using groupies.

A little bit overdue - I’ve finally had a chance to sit down and hammer out answers to all the questions that were asked about the inLinks passive income strategy. If you have further questions, please check out the Ask Vince page.

Graham Asks: How many sites does this need to be done on to make up the numbers you give as examples?
Vince Answers: The screenshot provided is of a network of 15 domain names, with 27 sub-domains per domain name. That’s 405 wordpress installations in total, hence the need for the automation scripts ☺ with which it took about 12 hours to set up.

Brad Asks: What’s a simple way to check that our site is cooked enough to submit to inlinks - is it based on our backlinks stats or PR etc.?
Vince Answers: Basically there is no definitive way to be sure – if you let the sites cook for 2-3 weeks you should be ok. If your alexa rank is below 4,000,000 and you have a few backlinks registering in yahoo, you should be fine. If you add sites before they have cooked, you will have to wait 3 months before they are re-reviewed

Brad Asks: Can you please give us some tips on the godaddy domain auctions, that seems like a really good idea! Also when you say cheap, are you talking the <$100 domains? I’m using yahoo site explorer to check them but so far haven’t come accross any cheap ones with loads of backlinks etc.
Vince Answers: There are a bunch of tools around for buying expiring domain names with existing page rank and backlinks. We are talking about domains which cost $5-10 at auction, plus a registration fee which follows. You can pick up a decent PR domain name for $10, sometimes less, and these domains will sell a lot more links. So much so that you don’t need to bothered with the subdomains.

Charlie Asks: Is it best to generate some links to the site.
Vince Answers: They will generate backlinks themselves. Just watch, a single domain with 27 subdomains posting 25 articles to each subdomain per day, will generate about 300 backlinks within 2 months… generally more.

Charlie Asks: What is the algorithm they use to dictate your income; is it on the PR and that dictates the cost they ppl pay or is it the same cost no matter what site you are on ?
Vince Answers: The algorithm hasn’t been published, but in my experience Page Rank is the most important, followed by alexa rank and backlinks evenly weighted. Also if the keyword which is being purchased appears in the URL you get much pricier links. At the moment the vast majority of links are $10 each, and you shouldn’t expect to sell any expensive links with this strategy. You will sell a bunch of links as part of a links package, and hence earn even less (sometimes as low as $1.60 per link)

Graham Says: I have had one site accepted by inlinks and the other rejected and told to come back when it has more content. Hopefully the links will start up soon.
Vince Says: Jumping the gun ☺ This is why its important to leave them to cook. Now you will have to wait 3 months before the rejected domain is reassessed for approval. Unfortunately you can’t just re-submit the site in 3 weeks since inLinks will tell you that the site has already been added. Their system is far from perfect.

Karen Kramer Asks: What settings do you use in AMA? Do you Auto accept articles?
Vince Answers: I auto accept articles, but I also auto-reject articles which are less than 30% re-written. I also generally ask for 25 articles per day per blog.

Karen Kramer Asks: What’s the advantage to setting blogs on subdomains as apposed to just adding AMA content to categories on the main blog?
Vince Answers: You want maximum exposure in the inLinks network. In my experience inLinks will only display one post from your website to publishers. If you add 27 subdomains, you have 2700% the exposure ☺

Karen Kramer Asks: Do I need to wait until the sites are ranked and indexed with Google before adding InLinks?
Vince Answers: At this stage google has absolutely nothing todo with the process. This may change in the future as inLinks improves their system.

Karen Kramer Asks: Does Inlinks rely solely on Alexa ranking for link value?
Vince Answers: No – inLinks takes a number of things into account, such as page rank, number of backlinks, alexa rank and also some keywords info. It may sound inconsistent with the answer above since being indexed doesn’t matter to this strategy – the point here is that even a site without page rank can be added to inlinks.

Bill Thomson Asks: Vince you mention letting a site cook for 2 to 3 weeks before submitting to InLinks - Is the waiting period based on waiting for a certain level of content before InLinks is happy or are we trying to spread the posts over time to avoid problems with Google?
Vince Answers: Nothing todo with google, this is just to give your site time to meet the inLinks minimum standards, whatever they may be.

Bill Thomson Asks: You mentioned not sticking too many domains in the same AMA/Godaddy/Inlinks accounts if you want to onsell the sites - how many would you bundle?
Vince Answers: I like to have about 10-15 domain names (each with 27 subdomains) per set of accounts. This leaves me with nice small networks of sites which are quite liquid if I want to sell them

Bill Thomson Asks: Would it be best just to repeat & rinse with just the 5 top InLinks categories in bundles?
Vince Answers: You could do, but with the automation scripts you may as well take care of all the categories.

Karen Kramer Asks: Does it matter if you use subcategories from AMA instead of the top level? I.E. setting up individual blogs for each sub-category in the Insurance group instead of setting up more general blogs for just your top five …top level categories?
Vince Answers: You could do this, but I don’t think you would receive enough content from AMA for this to be worth your while.

Karen Kramer Asks (again… ): When you look for auction domains on GoDaddy..what do you search for and how? i.e. do you look for domains with websites? do you use SEO firefox to check out domains? Is there an easier way to do this?
Vince Answers: Primarily I’m looking for domains with real Page Rank – check out http://www.freshdrop.net/ for finding these. Be careful of fakes, check every domain you buy in google, with seo for firefox installed, and check the website itself, etc etc etc. Its easy to get burnt when buying dropped domain names.

Karen Kramer Asks: What’s the best why to determine if an auction domain has backlinks?
Vince Answers: Use freshdrop to find the domains, then check them in yahoo. (SEO for firefox tool will check this for you)

Karen Kramer Asks: Are you too busy partying on a Sat nite to answer all these stupid questions?
Vince Answers: Yes, which is why I’m writing all these answers on a Thursday night, before a sing star party tomorrow and going to a gay bar for a birthday party on Saturday. Straight women in gay bars are easy pickings

On a daily basis I’m looking at how to monetize web properties. I’m personally quite intrigued by EzineArticles somewhat lazy approach to making a buck.

As a paying premium member, I personally fail to see the value in a rather expensive monthly subscription to speed up the approval process of new articles, which is the one and only benefit.

It makes squat all difference if my articles go live in 1 day, or 7. During the course of my EzineArticles career, with thousands of articles posted across many different accounts, there was only ever one time when the subscription had any value to me.

I hijacked a TV Advertising campaign for the new Dido album. The silly fools behind the commercial created a vague video intended to go viral, which instructed viewers to type something into google. The phrase was uncompetitive, so I wrote an article about it and posted it on EzineArticles. I wanted it to be up ASAP so I paid for a membership. My little trick worked and my article took the top spot for the contested phrase.

There is one very simple way in which EzineArticles could provide some real value to premium members without jeopardizing any of its philosophies or standards which have enabled its enviable success. I made my suggesting via twitter and was very promptly informed that it wasn’t on the cards.

On a side tangent, EzineArticles twitter presence is exceptional! I have received a very prompt reply to every direct message I have ever sent, including having my IP white listed when I flew into cambodia as it had been identified as potentially scraping the EzineArticles site. This is HIGHLY COMMENDABLE on EzineArticles part, but I digress…

My suggestion to EzineArticles, which would improve the value of a premium membership to the point where they would likely see a stream of new subscriptions, is to have a page dedicated to “Premium Articles” which is linked to from the EzineArticles Homepage with a do-follow link. The effect being that new articles would hang around on a high PageRank page for a longer period of time, hence receiving more value from the power of EzineArticles.

Effectively it would just be a mirror of the EzineArticles homepage, containing both categories and a list of the latest articles, but only containing articles submitted by premium members.

This would add value to a premium membership, and it would be something I would pay for.

A benefit for us: Increased Value
A benefit for EzineArticles: A LOT more subscribers, hence money.

I personally can’t see a reason for EzineArticles not to pursue this concept.

I would like to thank EzineArticles for the quality of service they provide - the one and only reason behind its success is the strict manual quality control.

One last thing - Some of your proof readers reject articles based on UK/AU spelling - In my experience just resubmitting unchanged articles normally gets them approved.

New from Google, apparently just a few hours ago, another update to the Google interface and user experience which goes by the name of “Google Instant Previews” - which are essentially page previews of search results.

My initial thoughts are:

1. It’s slow to load, so it probably wont have as big an impact as people may expect in the short term. This is quite a big factor considering how quickly results flash past with Google Instant Search

2. Big pictures showing the product people are looking for becomes much more important. Your pages need to look less spammy (sorry squeeze pages!)

3. SEO Click Through Rates may even-out more over the top 3-4 results. Result 3 may even get a higher SEO Ctr than Result 1.

4. Longer pages are better because they dominate more of the users screen when previewing a page.

So this adds a new SEO metric to our list of things to optimize - user appeal.

Your pages need to appeal visually to a user in order to get a high CTR from Google search results, which will in turn result in higher SEO rankings (Google is definitely tracking SEO CTR’s)

You can read more about it here… I found this page by searching for “Google Page Previews” after noticing I was getting page previews in my browser. I wasn’t sure if this was the result of a firefox plugin, or a Google Update - Apparently it was the latter.

The Problem:

A very common mistake small businesses are making with their websites is having multiple web addresses by which to reach your home page.

If you go to www.yourdomain.com, the search engines often feel this is a different website to yourdomain.com (without the www)

While it isn’t critical, and most search engines are able to cope with this common problem, you may find you receive significant SEO and traffic improvements by sorting it out.

Potentially your website is being penalized due to duplicate copies of your content, or you have backlinks pointing to four separate pages.

Try each of these on your own websites, obviously replacing “yourdomain.com” with your actual domain name.

www.yourdomain.com

yourdomain.com

Both of the above should redirect to the same location, most appropriately www.yourdomain.com – if you find this isn’t the case, you are presenting at least two copies of your website to the search engines.

Note: If you find one of the above results in a 404 (page not found) error it is best to speak to your web host or website team about resolving this.

In addition – one of the following may also show a duplicate copy of your web site. Three of the below should result in a “page not found” error. The 4th should ideally redirect to www.yourdomain.com

www.yourdomain.com/index.htm

www.yourdomain.com/index.php

www.yourdomain.com/index.asp

www.yourdomain.com/index.html

If you find one of the above shows your website without redirecting to www.yourdomain.com, you are potentially presenting three or more duplicate copies of your website to the search engines.

As per above, one of the four following may be yet another duplicate of your home page.

yourdomain.com/index.htm

yourdomain.com/index.php

yourdomain.com/index.asp

yourdomain.com/index.html

If you find that you can access your homepage via more than one of the above links without being redirected to www.yourdomain.com, you have a little problem which needs to be addressed.

The solution:

Easiest: Contact your webhost and request “a 301 redirect of the non-www to the www, and from index files to the directory url.” – if they ask for further clarification you can provide a link to each of the separate ways you can view your website and say “I need these all to 301 redirect to www.yourdomain.com”

More difficult: DIY… While this depends greatly on your web host, the most common platform is a LAMP server (Linux, Apache, mySQL, PHP) – if this isn’t the case for you, you will need to research “Mod-ReWrite for <Your Platform>”

If, like most websites, yours is hosted on a LAMP server:

You will need to edit (or create) a .htaccess file. This is just a file in the root (“www” or “html”) directory of your web host which is named “.htaccess” – this file needs to contain the following text:

RewriteCond %{THE_REQUEST} ^[A-Z]{3,9}\ /index\.html

RewriteRule (.*) http://www.yourdomain.com/ [R=301,L]

Replace “.html” with your index file extension, and “yourdomain.com” with your actual domain.

Warning: If you are using a CMS (Content Management System) you may have conflicting re-write rules. It is best to search for information about 301 permanent redirects that relates specifically to your CMS software. Most will have a plug-in which will take care of it all for you.

Twitter announced they were going to offer promoted tweets as a way to earn some money (finally) – but its not going to work…

Most people use twitter via a client, which is the reason twitter needed to take the “Promoted Tweets” route rather than just displaying advertising on twitters web console. And here-in lies the problem… Twitter isn’t, and can’t be, Google.

Twitter will need to distribute these promoted tweets by one of the following methods:

- Unsolicited – You receive a tweet from somebody you aren’t following, either in your twitter feed, or as a direct message.

Or

-You will receive a message @’ed at you.

Or

-Twitter promoted tweets will be placed in preferential positions on twitter search pages

I doubt the second option is viable, since the senders twitter page would be spammed with @ messages. If they try to be clever, its not hard to cross reference an @ message you receive with the senders page to see if it actually exists. So we’ll cross that one off the list.

Displaying tweets in a promoted position on the twitter search pages poses a few problems. First of all the traffic will be comparatively tiny, and this whole advertising plan won’t make much dosh. Secondly the people searching on twitter are searching for tweets, and if they were searching for any kind of products or services they would use Google. And thirdly, the clients will be able to filter these promoted items, rendering them useless.

The unsolicited tweets might seem like the best option, but again, a twitter client can easily cross reference the list of people it follows, to the tweets being received… The traffic might be initially massive, but the twitter clients will send twitter promoted tweets to the grave.

Apparently twitter has chosen to display promoted tweets in the search results… but this is just the beginning. Watch this space…

Its a question that’s regularly asked, and with more and more articles about page rank, if its worthwhile or not, I thought I should weigh in and also tell you how to increase page rank.

Before I answer the question “How to increase page rank” – I’m getting on my soap box for a minute to discuss what is page rank, and does it matter?

Does Page Rank Matter?

SEOMoz did a (ahem, self serving) Page Rank Spearman Correlation… essentially Page Rank did statistically weight in to search rankings, just it isn’t the single most authoritative metric… which we already knew.

I was surprised SEOMoz concluded that this meant page-rank had very little at all to do with search rankings.

Au Contraire!!!

Potentially Googles Algorithm doesn’t allow any single metric to be the definitive reason for rankings, but we already guessed as much. Potentially no single metric is allowed to account for more than 25% of a pages ranking… that would make sense.

The number of backlinks (as reported by Yahoo) was apparently more influential on rankings than Page Rank – We already know backlinks are very important to rank for a term, but consider also that backlink counts will correlate with page rank to some degree…

While you shouldn’t get fixated on pagerank and pagerank alone, increasing your page rank is an important part of SEO.

So how do you actually increase your page rank?

The easiest way is… to get a link from a page with higher pagerank than your own… It is that simple… almost…

If you get a link from a page with a high page rank, but which is also linking out to lots of other websites, you probably won’t seen an increase in pagerank.

If your link on the website with higher pagerank than your own includes the no-follow tag, it definitely won’t help you get a higher page rank.

The easiest way I’ve found for how to increase page rank is to make friends with people on blogger.com. Lots of blogger profiles have high page ranks (PR6+) and people are more than willing to give you a link if you give them one in exchange.
